Driving & Hiring in America

Most of the car rental companies in America have four basic rates, where you can save when you pre-book for 3 extra drivers, Sat Nav and a tank of fuel.

In America, we use a number of suppliers like, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz, Dollar, National, Sixt and Thrifty, with some of them offering a choice of four pre-pay rates, to include:- extra drivers, Sat Nav and a tank of fuel if needed.

USA & Extra Drivers

A slightly complicated part of hiring a car in the USA, can be the extra drivers. In California, it is the state law, that all drivers are included in the basic rate, although only Dollar says this in their terms. So now, you can book with Alamo or National and insist they include extra drivers in the cost. Budget include an extra driver on all their rates, regardless of where collected.

Included in America

Provided the usual travel insurance is taken out for the USA, no extra insurance cover is needed. However, this will not stop you being offered additional, optional, insurance, which you can decline, or go back and cancel within 24 hours.

Licence

Needs to have been held for one year, and full and clean, but if have endorsements, please let us know, so we can check with supplier.

Driver aged 18 years okay in New York & Michigan

Book with Hertz and drivers aged 18 & 19 will pay extra USD52/day locally. Only these two states allow drivers this young, otherwise must be 20 to drive in rest of USA. Also, can only drive vehicle classes A-F only (Economy to about Standard size).

Young Hertz Driver 20-24 yrs

Cannot drive all cars, like Prestige, Adrenaline, and Dream Cars where the renter must be age 25, but okay drive others, with local daily, underage charge of USD30/day.

Young Drivers other Suppliers

With Thrifty & Dollar, if aged 21 to 24 years, can drive all vehicle types, pay extra USD42 on arrival, but also need go as lead driver.

One Ways

One ways can either be free, or cost USD500+tax, or more, In states like Florida and California, there is no extra way fee to pay. This also applies with some companies between California, Arizona and Nevada (Alamo/National and Dollar).
