About Dominican Republic

Typically tropical for a Caribbean island which lies in the hurricane zone, so pick your time of year to go. The Peso is the currency, but US Dollars also accepted. Not to be confused with Dominica, the other Caribbean island. The Dom Rep shares an island with Haiti. The Dominicans speak Spanish as their language. Beaches, and eco-tourism in the mountains, attract many a tourist.

Santo Domingo International Airport is where probably make your first land fall, unless on a Caribbean cruise. Plenty of beaches on the main island as well as the smaller islands off the coast. Inland there are four separate mountain ranges to make your way around, up and down.

The largest lake is a salt lake lying below seas level. Pop down to the lowest part of the Caribbean and see Lake Enriquillo. Mountains, plains, valleys, river, lakes savannahs and sugar plantations make for an interesting mix. Santo Domingo is the capital. Then there is Greater Santo Domingo.

Did you Know The name of the island that the Dom Rep and Haiti share is called Hispaniola. Gained independence on four different occasions. Twice from the Spanish, once from France and once from Haiti. The last one was Spain in 1865.

Football and basketball are the main two sports played. There are about ten million Dominicans here, who are mainly Roman Catholic, with a good smattering of Evangelicals.
