About Tampere

Tampere was officially founded on the 1st of October in 1779. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, as an industrial centre, using the natural power of the rapids to generate energy needed for the nearby cotton mills. Nowadays, the industrial area has been converted to residential and leisure, with many first class restaurants in this red brick area.

Lenin Slept Here:-
The most bizarre attraction is the Lenin Museum, where you can see the sofa that Lenin once slept on, and countless busts. A shop nearby, sells memorabilia and is worth a visit, but it is also quite expensive. Visit the Moomin Valley exhibition at Tampere Art Museum. The main exhibit is Tove Jansson's lovable troll family.

Twilight Zone:-
Experience the twilight zone in midsummer. The sun sets for just a couple of hours, so there is never complete darkness, which is great for evening barbecues. Unfortunately, in winter months, it does gets dark very early in the afternoon.

Spa or not to Spa?:-
Make a day of it at the Holiday Club Tampere Spa, the site of an old cotton mill. This famous spa offers saunas, jacuzzi, a pool, saunas, steam rooms and mud spa treatments.

Fishing:-
Downtown fishing is possible at the Tammerkoski Rapids which run right thru the city. You will need a permit, but these can be purchased easily at the tourist office, or from a vending machine on the wall of Ross's restaurants.
