Touring Tanzania

One memorable drive in Tanzania starts in Arusha and heads west toward Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater. Leaving Arusha, the road passes through open plains and small towns, with Mount Meru visible in the distance. The terrain is dry and flat at first, with stretches of farmland and scattered acacia trees. As the drive continues, the road climbs slightly and enters the Lake Manyara region, where the landscape shifts to forest and wetlands. The lake itself is shallow and wide, often dotted with flamingos and other birds.

From Lake Manyara, the road leads to the town of Karatu and then up to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. This section is more rugged, with winding roads and cooler air. The crater is a massive volcanic caldera filled with wildlife and grasslands. The drive along the rim offers wide views and a sense of scale that is hard to match. For those with a permit and a suitable vehicle, descending into the crater adds another layer to the experience.

Roads are paved from Arusha to Karatu, though some sections may be rough or under repair. Fuel stations are available in major towns, and traffic is light outside urban areas. The route from Arusha to Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro is the most rewarding drive in Tanzania for those interested in nature and landscape. It combines access to national parks with varied terrain and a steady rhythm.

Serengeti

The migration of the Serengeti is a must, where wildebeest and zebra continually search for fresh grass, whilst the lions, crocodiles and others await their arrival. Another must do, if you are fit and prepared, is climbing Mount Kilmanjaro. Climbing up Kili is a major draw for many people. The Serengeti River is home to lots of crocodiles, who happily wait for the annual migration. Tourism and agriculture make most of the money.

The weather is hot with a yearly monsoon season. You will need a bob or two, or should I say, Tanzanian Shilling. East coast of Africa. Tanzanians speak a mix of Swahili and English.

The capital city of Tanzania is not Dar Es Salaam, but Dodoma. It's Africa, so most people watch football. There are around 45 million people living in this African country. Dar Es Saleem International Airport is the main arrival point for most tourists. The IATA code is DAR.
